FAQ's for Employees

Frequently Asked Questions for Employees

Q. Do you diagnose or treat medical problems that are not caused by work?

A. No, please see your G.P.

Q. My manager's asked me to consent to be referred to Occupational Health because I've had a lot of sick leave, what will happen?

A. You will receive an appointment by letter to your home address to see either the doctor or senior nurse in a one to one confidential consultation. An hour is allowed for an initial consultation which may involve a physical examination if appropriate. You may bring a companion with you if required. Bring with you information on your current medication. The doctor or nurse will have a confidential discussion with you. They may require further information and may ask you to consent to contact your G.P. or specialist for a report. Although consultations are confidential, managers will receive a report about your ability to continue working, the likelihood of returning to work or recommendations about changes to work or shift patterns that may be beneficial. Your personal medical details would not be given to Human Resources or your manager without your permission. Occupational Health medical records are kept confidential by the Occupational Health Department.

Q. I can't cope with my work anymore due to stress or ill health. How can you help me?

A. Either ask your manager to refer you to us, or you can refer yourself by ringing or emailing for an appointment. We can give you confidential advice about the options available to solve or help your problem.

Q. Can I refer myself to Occupational Health?

A. Yes. You have direct access to the Occupational Health service, but remember that we deal with work related ill health - you should see your G.P. with any other medical problem. Your visit and anything you discuss will be strictly confidential. We can support you to help you to keep working if you are suffering from ill health - mental or physical - or a disability.

Q. Do you do vision tests? A large part of my job is computer work.

A. If you think you need a vision test telephone on 7200 or email

for an appointment with a nurse. You will be given a voucher to take to Specsavers for a full eye test and spectacles if needed. You will need to bring your employee number with you.

Q. I am a computer user and I think I need a new chair as my back has been sore lately. What should I do?

A. Identify your department work station assessor and request an assessment. Work with the changes recommended for several weeks. If you are still experiencing problems that you relate to your work station, contact the Safety Office for further advice on ext 7078.

Q. Do I ring Occupational Health if someone is injured or ill at work?

A. No, we are not a treatment service. You should find your nearest First Aider, or dial 2222 in an emergency (01786 467999 from a mobile).

Q. I'd like to stop smoking. Can you help?

A. Yes, we offer a smoking cessation counseling service. Please contact the department for further information.

Q. I travel abroad with work. Can you advise on travel immunizations I may need?

A. Yes and we can administer many of them. It is important that you allow enough time to have vaccinations before you travel so make an appointment for an assessment as soon as you know where you are going.
